National Sing-Out for Peace

NORTH FORK, CALIFORNIA

I was thrilled when Jimmy Collier joined the Sing. I've known Jimmy for years, since he's a regular performer at the Western Workers Labor Heritage Festival. Jimmy was in SNCC and used to entertain the audiences before Martin Luther King, Jr. came to speak at various places. Sometimes he'd have to keep people going for hours if King was diverted for safety reasons. Jimmy has many stories and has had a wide range of experiences in his meaningful life. He worked on the Clearwater for several years, did an educational presentation about black cowboys for many others.
And in a two for one special, Barney Berrier wrote that great "Sheeple" verse. North Fork ROCKS!
By the way, Jimmy says that North Fork is the geographical center of California. - Hali

When I first contacted Anne, I wasn't sure if she'd be able to do this, since she was recovering from a series of illnesses and accidents that made Job look like he'd had an easy time. Anne immediately sent this out to her vast email list, doubling the number of people who participated in the event. She and Ginny Hildebrand (who I'd met on a trip to Cuba in 1996) organized the Pittsburgh Sing. I was so glad that Anne felt up to doing this, both for her amazing spirit and the fact that she felt well enough to do it. Love you, Anne! - Hali

I know Mary from the San Francisco Folk Club and campouts. She actually sang FOUR TIMES on Earth Day - once with her grandson (baby Jeremiah) and her family, at Fair Oaks Park with the Sacramento Ukulele Club, then with friends from Idaho (in this video) and lastly at the Yacht Harbor in Woodside with several members of the Ukulele Club of Silicon Valley! - Hali

Christiana Johnson, a seventeen-year-old student at Castro Valley High School, has been studying ASL for years at school, and did a fantastic job of signing for the San Francisco Earth Day event. She was filmed on my Flip camera by my 15-year-old grandson, Isaiah McLane. - Hali

I've already written a lot about this Sing in The Story of Sing Out for Earth Day. I put out a call to the local choruses I knew, and the Rockin' Solidarity Chorus and La Pena Chorus participated. I've been a member of Freedom Song Network for years (and of course, more recently, Occupella). I've known Country Joe for a while through various Berkeley causes and the Berkeley UU. Thanks to Pat Wynne for calling Jello Biafra as soon as I mentioned that I'd love to have him take part and getting him involved. Pat and I sing with Liliana Herrera in a group, The ReSisters, that does political satire (songs by Bernard Gilbert). Liliana did the Spanish translation, and an incredible job of singing them. Thanks to all of you!
Each verse was sung by a different chorus/group/special person. Check out the video to see them all! (The girl standing next to me is my now 9-year-old granddaughter Amaiya McLane, who was 8 on Earth Day. I call her the littlest Occupella). - Hali

You don't see Dana Charnofsky (who organized this)in the video, since she was behind the camera. Dana and her partner Dale organize regular musical performances at this well-known Church and venue, and actually did two Sings that day - the one in the video at noon, and another sing with the congregation. - Hali
